A Munich Entrepeneur with Passion

Raphael Gielgen spends over 200 days a year traveling, visiting more than 100 companies, and exploring their work environments. He also has the opportunity to experience innovative urban quarters and exceptional development projects. Herzog & de Meuron is an international architectural practice based in Basel, Switzerland. Established in 1978, the practice is led by the two founders together with the Partners and the CEO. Today, an international team of over 500 collaborators is engaged in a wide range of projects across Europe, the Americas and Asia. The main office in Basel works in tandem with studios in Berlin and Munich, Paris, London, Hong Kong, New York, and San Francisco.

Dr. Julian Petrin has been an urbanist and urban researcher for over 20 years. He is a member of the German Academy for Urban and Regional Planning (DASL) and was appointed to the Convention of the Federal Foundation for Building Culture in 2012. From 2020 to 2022, he was an interim professor for Smart City Solutions at the Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences. He is also a co-founder of the Urban Change Academy, established in 2020. In this article, he offers his perspective on the extensive public participation of Munich’s residents in shaping ideas for the redesign of the Postpaket Areal, and reflects on the extraordinary transformation of the former Paketposthalle (parcel post hall) into a multifunctional venue for exhibitions and cultural events.
